Predator is a Mother’s Day Movie

First of all, Belated Happy Mother’s Day!

Second, Predator.

Actually, FIRST Predator.

For those unaware, Predator is a science fiction erotic fantasy romantic comedy film about a group of boy scouts overcoming adversity on a camping trip across enemy lines. Between the hijinks, camaraderie, and that one guy learning to shave, there is also a heartwarming coming-of-age story for a young extraterrestrial predator trying to collect human spinal cords and skulls for, presumably, his dear old mum.

Adorable.

Now, a lot of folks will say this is not a Mother’s Day movie due to the lack of women in the cast. There is a woman, but she is mostly comic relief/captured enemy combatant who needs to stop playing games and tell us what’s hunting us! ALL OF US! But the writers and directors of Predator knew a Mother’s Day movie about women would be too on the nose. This is a movie about the SONS of women. Every single one of them, once little babies who gestated inside a living host. Mom.

If that’s insufficiently convincing, the writers even added some clarifying exposition to the dialogue when Dillian and Dutch first meet. “Dillian, you son of a bitch.” Son. Mother.

Speaking of mother. The dialogue comes full circle toward the end when the Predator removes his mask in an endearing effort to show vulnerability. And Dutch says, “You’re one ugly motherfucker.” It’s game recognizing game.

Mother’s Day.
